The Idiot and The Savant
A tale of naivety and skill
“Curiosity can be a bitch, but obsession can be a pain, especially when you’re in the middle of it.”
On a cold afternoon 3 years ago, an idiot walked into a department store hoping to pass the time waiting for someone. Bored and bemused, he walked around the fragrance aisle with no particular intention in mind. One smell, two smell, three smell—the more he smelt, the more things smelt the same.
Some coffee beans were shoved into his nose, hoping the break would do him good. It did, but as he smelt more, nothing moved, nothing touched him, nothing made him feel.
This is a story of a 3-year journey of a foolish person trying to find something that could make him feel. Something personal, something natural, something that had a depth of emotion.
Smell isn’t logical. It isn’t logical as it has everything to do with feeling, and feelings are tied to memory, and memories are tied to pain and happiness.
A year and a half passed and after 900 formulations later, he knew he was out of his depth. As chance would have it, a gentleman named Mr. Jemsheer walked in to offer help. Monsieur Jemsheer had two things: a keen sense and a curiosity to tinker.
Over the next year they would tinker, discuss, formulate, reformulate, and then refine.
To love something needs commitment—more so at the moment you want to give up. But to love something in the moment only takes an instant. Such is the strange paradox of love.
The collection before you is part art, part curation, made by two people of nomadic origin.
We hope you like it as much as we have enjoyed (endured…..) making it.
With Love and Regards
MIKEL.
